This northernmost city in New Zealand’s North Island attracts a fair few retirees due to its excellent quality of life and exciting activities that are everywhere to enjoy. Auckland and the Bay of Islands are nearby, making it an even more ideal place to retire.

Terrific Weather

One of the most appealing aspects of living here is the excellent weather throughout the year. Summertime conditions are generally pleasant with the highest temperatures reaching the high 20’s to early 30’s degrees. The lowest temperatures in the winter rarely dip below 10 degrees, unlike many cooler climates in the country.

Picturesque Waterfall

Whangarei Falls is a beautiful waterfall that is surrounded by lush parkland. You can find plenty of parking close by and choose from one of three platforms where you can view the waterfall in all its glory. You can also follow a trail lined with gravel down to the foot of the waterfall.

Great Walks

There are many great places around the city where you can go to enjoy a days walk. The Waimahanga Walkway passes through a mangrove habitat and will give you the chance to enjoy some of the natural beauty found in the area. You can also take a stroll through the Quarry Gardens, which features a variety of indigenous plant life. Another ideal place to go for a walk is the beautiful tropical oasis that sits in the city’s centre.

New Animal Friends

The Kamo Wildlife Sanctuary is home to some of the most intriguing wildlife creatures. Lions, tigers and other majestic animals can be seen roaming in spacious enclosed areas. Staff members who work for the sanctuary are available to answer questions and provide more information on the importance of wildlife conservation. Kiwi North is another great place where you can go to see some indigenous animals and learn more about the area’s natural history.

Fascinating Museums

You won’t have to travel far to find several terrific museums that you can visit. The Waipu Museum pays homage to the event in history known as the Great Migration. Beautiful artworks can be seen inside many of the local galleries. The Packard and Pioneer Museum includes a collection of vintage automobiles and items that we used by early pioneers.
